Marlene Dumas would be considered to be an postmodern artist, in her artworks she combines human emotion to her pieces of art. She uses postmodern visual strategies to explain and describe what is present without speaking. Strategies such as text and image, appropriation, and hybridity complements her work. In "The Woman of Algiers" Marlene Dumas uses her creation of art to make a conceptual statement that is clearly shown. It gives the viewer their perspective on her art. Post#11 Marlene Dumas " The Woman of Algiers's"
The artist of “The Woman of Algiers's " in the year of 2001 is Marlene Dumas, she was born in Cape Town, South Africa in 1953 and currently lives and work in Amsterdam. The artwork is based on a photograph that was shown in a French newspaper by the name of L' Express. Marlene Dumas used oil on canvas to create the work of art. I chose this work of art because I found the image to be quite unique and interesting. In this artwork a naked woman is held back by two men, her female areas are censored by black rectangles. In a quote by Marlene Dumas she stated, “I am dealing with emotions that everyone feels. But I'm always conscious of this tension between knowing that you are making an object, a physical thing, and being aware that you are also referring to things [the emotions] that cannot actually be painted. If the painting works, that tension is in there ". Her statement is what sets the tone while she created the artwork this is why I chose this piece of art from Marlene Dumas.
